MARCH 15, ’15 WHAT IS MCS/ MULTI CHEMICAL SENSITIVITY– AGAIN????
I HAVE HAD MANY ASK AGAIN— WELL JUST WHAT IS MCS???? ISN’T IT JUST ALLERGIES????????????????????
NO——— IT IS NOT——-
SO IF YOU HAVE NOT READ ANY POSTS ON MY BLOG— HERE IS A SMALL AMOUNT OF THE INFORMATION AGAIN:
Multiple Chemical Sensitivities (MCS) is a
medical condition characterized by debilitating
chemical sensitivities. People who are chemically
sensitive are made sick by exposures to
chemicals found in many common products such
as pesticides, perfumes, tobacco smoke, new
carpets, air “fresheners,” new paint and building
materials, and many cleaning and laundry
products. Most of these chemicals will make
everyone sick at high levels, but for chemically
sensitive people exposures to even small
amounts of these substances can cause
symptoms. Some chemically sensitive people are
only mildly affected while others have the more
severe form of the illness called MCS.
Symptoms experienced by people with MCS
range from mild to life-threatening and include
headache, trouble concentrating, nausea,
diarrhea, fatigue, muscle and joint pain,
dizziness, difficulty breathing, irregular heart
beat, and seizures. MCS symptoms in children
include red cheeks and ears, dark circles under
the eyes, hyperactivity, and behavior or learning
problems. After an exposure, symptoms may
occur immediately or be delayed for up to a few
days. Reactions may last from a few seconds to
weeks or months. People with MCS often react to
a variety of foods, drugs, molds, and pollen as
well as chemicals.
Creating a Healthier Environment
Reducing exposures to chemicals improves the
health of those with MCS. Better air quality also
helps promote the health of everyone. The
following are ways to create a healthier
· Avoid pesticides, use least toxic integrated
pest management (IPM)
· Avoid newly built or remodeled buildings, or
build with less toxic materials
· Avoid new paint and solvent-based stains and
· Avoid new carpets
· Avoid gasoline, solvent, dry-cleaning, and tar
· Avoid tobacco smoke and vehicle exhaust
· Use least toxic, natural, and unscented
cleaning, laundry, and sanitizing products
· Avoid perfume, cologne, and scented
personal care products
· Avoid air “freshener” sprays, incense, and
· Use electric utilities or radiant heat
· Open windows, ventilate buildings with clean
fresh air and/or use portable room air filters.
Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS) is basically a subset of Environmental Illness (EI), which is caused by living in a toxic world. The chemicals that were synthesized after World War II (including, pesticides, synthetic fragrances, cleaning products, detergents, etc.) are mostly “petro-chemicals” (petroleum based) and are quite toxic to humans. There have been virtually no studies done on the majority of these chemicals to see how they affect humans – the industry just placed the chemicals in the environment with the assumption that they are “safe, till proven toxic”, instead of the other way around. One of the biggest offenders is PERFUME and other scented products. Did you know that many of the ingredients in your perfume are the exact same ingredients found in GASOLINE??!! I didn’t either! The scary thing is that the perfume industry is NOT REGULATED at all – they can put any number of chemicals in fragrance without revealing what those chemicals are – or how they affect humans. We humans are all participating in a giant “lab experiment” against our knowledge and against our will, and it’s making some of us VERY sick.
Those of us who are becoming chronically ill from these chemicals are similar to the “canaries in the coal mine”. Coal miners would take a canary into the mines with them to warn them when the air became toxic. They knew that when the canary stopped singing or died, it was time to get out before it affected them as well. We “human canaries” are here to warn the rest of you that, unless you start making changes and avoid as many toxic chemicals as possible, you too may become very sick. Non toxic living is actually much “simpler” and cheaper!
Don’t be fooled, these chemicals are affecting ALL of us in some way or another. Think about the last time you got a headache for no apparent reason. Could it be possible that someone had recently sprayed perfume or pesticides near you without you knowing it? Had you recently used scented laundry detergent or Clorox to clean with? Do you get headaches or feel nauseous from being around people wearing perfume or cologne? Do you feel you need to hold your breath when you go down the detergent aisle at the grocery store? All these things are your body’s way of telling you something is wrong with the air you’re breathing. While an MBA in health care may help you understand the whys and wherefores of the medical issues it doesn’t take a masters degree to listen to your body and know that things are not right.
It’s like playing “Russian Roulette” – you never know how long your immune system can hold out before breaking down. Some people may never reach the point of “chronic illness” that I did – but most people are being affected, possibly without realizing it. Cancer has increased dramatically since World War II (after all the chemicals came out). Attention Deficit Disorder is on the rise (more and more of our children are being put on toxic, brain-altering drugs like Ritalin when simply cleaning up their environment could solve their problems). Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Alzheimer’s Disease, Allergies, Asthma, Lupus, Fibromyalgia, and Multiple Sclerosis are also increasing. All these illnesses could very well have a chemical connection to their cause or, at the very least, these patients would benefit from using less-toxic products. Pretty much any “immune system” disorder could be helped by a cleaner environment and by using safer products.
The products we use on our skin are absorbed directly into the bloodstream (the reason why nitroglycerine, nicotine, and hormone patches work). The chemicals we breathe (such as perfumes, formaldehyde, pesticides, etc.) all go straight to our brains and can cause low-level to severe damage – similar to how someone can snort cocaine or glue to get a “high”. Start reading labels – check for petro-chemicals, formaldehyde, and fragrance, and avoid them as much as possible. A clue that an ingredient may be a petro-chemical is the “prop” prefix. A clue that an ingredient releases formaldehyde is “Quaternium”. Be careful about products labeled “fragrance free” or “unscented”. Don’t trust them! Read the label and be sure they don’t list “fragrance” or “masking fragrance”. Don’t put anything on your skin you’d be afraid to eat, because the end result is the same!
Before I got sick, I had no clue that I was slowly being “poisoned” by products that I assumed were “safe” since they were on the market! If this could happen to me – YOU COULD BE NEXT.

The Differences Between Allergies and Sensitivity : Unscentify
I have been asked to write about my worst experience with MCS– I’m not sure I can go there– because maybe I don’t want to be judged– I sure as hell don’t want to be mocked– BUT– I prayed about this & God assured me I need to share this– as I didn’t go through it to not learn compassion & learn to give HOPE– to everyone who has any form of MCS– so here it comes dead straight from my heart–
Several years ago Gary & I had an INN SITTING BUSINESS– what is that– well we had owned lodging– & knew you could not find anyone to take over your business so you could escape– so we started an Inn sitting business where we would go in & take over– & the owners could walk out & leave their business with us & for what ever reason– for a few days or a few weeks– well — we went to Cripple Creek Colo to an Inn– & they had new carpet– new drapes– new bedspreads– new paint– the biggest toxic chemical mess in the world– & enough formaldehyde in that place to embalm a small city!! Needless to say I didn’t last long– & Gary loaded me up in the car & drove like hell all the way back to our home in Kansas– I thought I would get better– but I didn’t– the chemicals affected my nervous system –OK– I could not breathe– my throat was almost totally swollen shut-my eyes were almost totally swollen shut– brain fog– rash my skin looked like I had a birth mark over all of it– as I was bleeding under my skin– I was swollen up like a big toad– ALL MCS symptoms- you have ever read about– BUT– for the very first time– the chemicals affected my total nervous system– I could not sit– lay down– wear clothes– have anything touch me-could not take a shower– wash my hair– and I could not keep anything inside of me– I could not eat– all I did was drink water– then the PANIC ATTACKS STARTED– the worst I have ever experienced in my life– it was like riding a bucking horse — a terrible mad violent bucking horse– you thought this horse will finally get tired & stop this– but if the attacks stopped it was only for that damned horse to get it’s breath & go again– & I could not breathe it was like I could see my self as a gold-fish who had jumped out of the fish bowl & could no longer breathe without water– & riding a bucking horse at the same time– All who know me well- know I’m very independent & bullheaded & if I make up my mind to do something –I very well can damned do it–BUT– now- I was not in control of any action of my body & I was lost– me who is always in control– could not control these panic attacks!! And I had all other MCS symptoms you have ever read about & heart pumping– etc- etc etc– & I can’t keep anything in my system– I can’t lay down– I can’t rest– I can’t sleep–I can’t eat–
I had a health professional say– we have got to get her to the hospital– so we went– & they had NO PROTOCOL for anyone with MCS– they took samples of me– & then as I heard some one in the next room say– she is going to die– I said to Gary get me out of here– & he did — from the tests we found my body was feeding on it’s self– & I had water toxicity– from only drinking water-as it was all I could keep inside of me- also still having panic attacks sooooo bad– I really wanted to die– this had gone on for many- many -many days now– & I prayed that night for God to please -please– take me–or get me to some real help– And it must not have been my time to go– as God sent me to Dr Ed McKenzie in Holton, Ks. it was a real struggle to get clothes on– & sit in a car & close the door– & ride from our home in Cottonwood Falls, Ks. to Holton, Ks.– Doc Ed was a friendly face– I don’t remember any thing he said to me– EXCEPT– when he took my hand & looked me in the eyes & said– You are going to get better— OH MY GOSH— HOPE– HOPE -HOPE- the first time anyone had given me HOPE!! I got my mind around that– HOPE– those damned panic attacks– I can ride them– I can make it!!!! Doc sent home Standard Process Complete with us & said– mix this & at first just try a tablespoon full & see if you can keep it in you– so every hour or so I took a tablespoon of natural healthy Standard Process Complete– & it finally stayed in me–I lived in our rocking chair for weeks– & weeks– when I wasn’t pacing the floor & riding out those damned panic attacks!!! I finally got in my mind– go ahead & buck & I’ll spur ya– now give me all ya got & lets get it over with– & I would ride that wave of panic attacks!! I finally saw HOPE in Gary’s eyes when I could keep something inside of me– & I could talk in some form of a sentence by placing more then 2 words together– & could dress myself– when he said– we need to go to see Dr Ed today– I think we went every other day maybe every day– for weeks– then months–
I remember some time– Gary had an old people stool in our shower– & asked if I wanted to try getting clean– some point– I remember being able to let water hit my skin with out it feeling like a million hot coals burning me–& sitting off more panic attacks– I remember some time I was even able to put my head in the kitchen sink & let water hit my head– no shampoo– could not take any thing but water on my head same as no soap or chemicals when I took a shower–
I remember when I finally tried to eat a cracker this was after weeks & weeks -& weeks- & only a crumb & it tasted so bad– as I had not had any other nourishment in me except Standard Process Complete for maybe several months!!
We removed every single scented thing from our home at that time– we took out every single chemical– I sprayed Vinegar in the house in a spray bottle to neutralize any other smells– I did that in the car to be able to go to the doctor’s office–
And I journaled to keep my mind– I wrote notebook– after notebook– as I could still not put together a complete sentence– in talking!! I would write– rock in that rocking chair– & pace & ride out those damned panic attacks– & write Gary notes as I still could not put the words together to come out to make sense in talking!!
Gary for the first time in our married life had to take care of me instead of me always taking care of him–& he had to take on responsibility he had never ever done in our marriage before– & I could see he was scared to death most of the time– & I could not talk or have enough strength in me at that time to give him any HOPE as it took all the HOPE I had to just make it minute by minute in my own life!!
I was soooooo sick for sooooooo long– it is now a blur– it is a dark hole– that I won’t let myself get sucked into ever again in my life– I will never ever let myself be exposed to all those chemicals– I will always keep a “safe home” & I’ll fight for my chemical free “safe home”– as it is all I have to protect myself– it is my only safe place in this world– And I won’t let people in my safe home ever again that have chemicals on them–
When Gary & I travel we travel in our RV our safe home on wheels!!
I have kept all those journals I wrote for weeks & months– but I have never ever gone back to reread them– WAY TOOOOOOO DARK OF A PLACE— Praise God I can’t even remember it all!!
When people say– what makes you think you are an expert on MCS to help other people–
WELL I HAVE LIVED WITH MCS IN ONE FORM OR ANOTHER FOR OVER 50 YEARS-
AND I HAVE BEEN IN A HELL HOLE– FROM MCS– THAT I NEVER EVER WANT ANYONE ELSE TO BE IN– – & IF SOMEONE HAD NOT HAVE GIVEN ME “HOPE”– I WOULD NOT BE HERE!!! I remember the first day I was able to laugh again–
(There are tears are hitting my key board as it write this)– all I can say is IF I HAD NOT KNOWN JESUS CHRIST AS MY LORD & SAVIOR — I COULD NOT HAVE MADE IT!!!
( Thank you JESUS- & Thank you Dr. Ed McKenzie — & Thank you Ed Pope for letting God use you- to lead me -to Jesus Christ as my Lord & Savior & thank you Gary Bruce for loving me & being my best half .) I love ya all!!!
It is still very hard when people have NO FRICK’EN CLUE WHAT MCS IS– or how it can try to control our life– & how many people continue to use all the toxic chemicals & fragrances that are killing ALL OF US!!!!!!!!!!!!

What is Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS)?
MCS is a condition in which persons become ill following exposure to certain chemicals encountered in everyday life. Such chemicals include smoke, pesticides, plastics, synthetic fabrics, perfumes, scented products, petroleum products, fumes, and paints.Persons who experience MCS have a more intense reaction to chemicals than most people, in much the same way some individuals have a far more severe allergic reaction to animals or pollen. (Retrieved 10/4/12 from: http://www.ilru.org/html/publications/readings_in_IL/MCS.html)Multiple Chemical Sensitivities (MCS) was identified in a 1989 multidisciplinary survey of 89 clinicians and researchers, and modified in 1999. Top consensus criteria (Multiple chemical sensitivity: a 1999 consensus, 1999) for MCS define the condition by these criteria:
- A chronic condition.
- Symptoms recur reproducibly.
- Symptoms recur in response to low levels of chemical exposure.
- Symptoms occur when exposed to multiple unrelated chemicals.
- Symptoms improve or resolve when trigger chemicals are removed.
- Multiple organ systems are affected.Toxic substances that people with MCS become disabled by include any quantity of exposures to pesticides, secondhand smoke, alcohol, fresh paint, scented products and perfumes, candles, fragrances, food preservatives, flavor enhancers, aerosols, tap water, cosmetics, personal care products, new carpets, petroleum products, formaldehyde, outdoor pollutants, newspaper ink, cleaning compounds, printing and office products, and other synthetically derived chemicals. Some also become ill from natural products that are highly concentrated such as natural orange cleaners due to high volatile organic compound and pesticide concentration. Symptoms can range from minor annoyances (headache, runny nose) to life-threatening reactions (seizures, anaphalaxis).(Retrieved 10/4/12 from: http://mcs-america.org/index_files/MCS.htm )
Multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS) is also called “environmental illness” or “sick building syndrome.” It refers to a variety of non-specific symptoms reported by some people after possible exposure to chemical, biologic, or physical agents. Some say that levels of exposure generally considered safe for most people can have an effect on a few.
The symptoms people report are wide-ranging and not specific. They include headache, fatigue, dizziness, nausea, congestion, itching, sneezing, sore throat, chest pain, changes in heart rhythm, breathing problems, muscle pain or stiffness, skin rash, diarrhea, bloating, gas, confusion, difficulty concentrating, memory problems, and mood changes. (Retrieved 10/4/12 from http://www.webmd.com/allergies/multiple-chemical-sensitivity)Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS) is a medical condition characterized by a heightened sensitivity to chemicals. People who have MCS become ill when exposed to a variety of chemicals, many of which are commonly encountered in everyday life. Some people have only mild chemical sensitivities, while others have a more severe form of the illness called MCS.Substances that frequently cause symptoms in chemically sensitive people include pesticides, perfume/cologne and other scented products, fresh paint, new carpets, many building materials, solvents, fresh ink, smoke, vehicle exhaust, industrial fumes, and many cleaning products. Other scented products include air “fresheners,” fragrance-emitting devices, fabric softener, potpourri, incense, essential oils, and most soaps, shampoos, hair products, skin lotions, and laundry detergents.Symptoms can occur after inhaling, touching, or ingesting these or other substances. Reactions to scented products can occur even in people who cannot smell them. Because people with MCS react to chemicals at levels that ordinarily do not affect others, chemical sensitivity is similar to an allergy, but the symptoms and mechanism are not the same as those of traditional allergies to pollen, animals, and dust. Many of the above substances can make anyone sick at high concentrations, but chemically sensitive people can be harmed by exposures to even minute amounts. While some of the symptoms reported by people with MCS are similar to known toxic reactions (such as those listed on Material Safety Data Sheets), they can occur at exposure levels considered safe for the general population. Additionally, many chemically sensitive people experience symptoms that are vastly different from typical toxic reactions. This individual variability and exquisite sensitivity can be so pronounced many scientists and doctors find it hard to accept as realIt should be noted that the full range of toxicity of most chemicals is not known. Of the more than 80,000 commercial chemicals in use today, only a small fraction have been adequately studied. In addition, little is known about the cumulative effects of chemical exposures and the effects of being exposed to more than one chemical at a time. Despite this lack of information, workers and the public are often falsely reassured of the safety of chemical exposures. People with MCS, the proverbial canaries in the mine, appear to be early victims of “better living through chemistry.”Exposures to pesticides and solvents are most implicated in causing MCS. The types of substances that typically trigger symptoms in people with MCS are synthetic chemicals, such as those found in pesticides, plastics, and fragrances (most are manufactured from petrochemicals) and petrochemicals themselves, such as fuels and solvents extracted from crude oil or coal tar. Exposures to low levels of gases like nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide, and hydrogen sulfide (common components of outdoor air pollution) can also be problematic for people with MCS, as is exposure to chlorine and combustion products. Lead, mercury, and other heavy metals can contribute to the development or aggravation of MCS as well. MCS frequently involves imbalances in a person’s nervous, immune, and endocrine (hormonal) systems, as well as impaired detoxification abilities. Food intolerance is common and may be so severe that a person’s diet is limited to only a few foods. Medication intolerance is also common. A person with MCS may react to mold, pollen, animals, and dust, although the symptoms may be different from those of traditional allergies. Brain reactions, characterized by difficulty in thinking or speaking, are also common. People with MCS may also react to naturally-occurring chemicals like skunk musk, flower essences, and tree sap.In addition, some people with MCS are sensitive to electromagnetic fields. They can be made sick by exposures to cell phones and towers, computers wireless telephones and utility meters, other wireless devices, fluorescent lights (including CFLs), microwave ovens, other electrical appliances, battery re-chargers, dimmer switches, and security and scanning equipment. It is not uncommon for people with MCS to also have chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) and fibromyalgia. It is not yet known whether these are separate diseases or whether they represent different manifestations of a common underlying problem. The presence of candida syndrome (an illness thought to result from the overgrowth of, or hypersensitivity to, C. Albicans or other candida strains) is also common. Some people with MCS also have chronic Lyme disease. (Retrieved 10/4/12 from: http://www.chemicalsensitivityfoundation.org/pdf/What-Is-MCS-by-Ann-McCampbell.pdf)
WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF MCS????
SYMPTOMS experienced by people with MCS range from mild to life-threatening and include headache, trouble concentrating, nausea, diarrhea, fatigue, muscle and joint pain, dizziness, difficulty breathing, irregular heart beat, and seizures and more. MCS symptoms in children include red cheeks and ears, dark circles under the eyes, hyperactivity, and behavior or learning problems. After an exposure, symptoms mayoccur immediately or be delayed for up to a few days. Reactions may last from a few seconds to weeks or months. People with MCS often react to a variety of foods, drugs, molds, and pollen as well as chemicals.
What causes MCS???
Many people have developed MCS after being exposed to chemicals in a newly built home, recently remodeled office, or following a pesticide or solvent exposure. Others slowly become ill over a period of years. Creating a Healthier Environment Reducing exposures to chemicals improves the health of those with MCS. Better air quality also helps promote the health of everyone. The following are ways to create a healthier environment:
: Avoid pesticides
· Avoid newly built or remodeled buildings, or build with less toxic materials
· Avoid new paint and solvent-based stains and transparent finishes
· Avoid new carpets
· Avoid gasoline, solvent, dry-cleaning, and tar fumes
· Avoid tobacco smoke and vehicle exhaust
· Use least toxic, natural, and unscented cleaning, laundry, and sanitizing products
· Avoid perfume, cologne, and scented personal care products
· Avoid air “freshener” sprays, incense, and fragrance-emitting devices
· Use electric utilities or radiant heat
· Open windows, ventilate buildings with clean fresh air and/or use portable room air filters
